Announcing: We've started our 2011-2012 school year!
Thank you to all  who are volunteering!

Each fall we are looking for special volunteers! Are you interested in volunteering as a Math Mentor for elementary and middle school students in the Midland area this school year? Or would you like to help mentor and train MS/HS kids in a variety of science olympiad events for an early spring tournament?  Please contact our volunteer coordinator below to sign up in the fall of 2012.
S*M*A*R*T hosts a Mentoring Program that partners area adult volunteers with middle school math students. The goal of the S*M*A*R*T Mentoring program is to improve students’ overall confidence and performance in basic math skills.

Students receive one-on-one guidance from their mentors when working on activities that involve problem solving and basic math concepts. All students in the class are paired with a mentor.

The students participate in the same curriculum material as other math classes and the teachers organize the activities and time the student spends with the mentor.

S*M*A*R*T also supports local science olympiad teams on Sundays to assist secondary students train in competing in a variety of science events in March.

The mentors have a special interest in math and science and share it to help others appreciate STEMS. The volunteer mentors come from a variety of backgrounds with the majority of them employed with Dow Chemical and Dow Corning.

These mentors have been background-checked by Midland Public Schools, trained in class procedures and typical middle school behaviors and are sharing their time in the classroom one day a week.

Over the past 5 years S*M*A*R*T has paired over 180 mentors and students in four separate Midland Public Schools, and other area classrooms. Contact Meta4 if you are interested in bringing S*M*A*R*T to your school or in volunteering as a mentor.
