Eureka
Club is an Extended-Day Enrichment Program available for all Bay City
Academy students grades K-6. During Eureka Club time our students
will learn and practice creative and critical thinking through
inquiry projects that follow their own interests and questions.
There are four areas or centers that make up the Thinkering Workshop part of the Eureka Club: Wondering Center, Build-It Center, Investigation Center, and the Reflection Center. Students will engage in several types of creating over the course of the program such as: Engineering, Architecture, Writing, Composing Music, Visual Arts (including drawing, painting, sculpting, computer presentation / design), Performing, and Programming. Through this active investigation and creating, students will develop the following learning habits of mind: Curiosity, Investigation, Invention, Innovation, Creating, Reflection, and Communication.
The afternoon format is highly engaging and creative. Students will engage in a process of learning we call “Thinkering Workshop,” where they investigate topics in which they are interested. Over time, students engage in all parts of the Thinkering Process as an ongoing cycle: Connect to Selves, Asking questions / Identifying problems, Investigate, Create, Share / Communicate, Students will engage in the cycle 5-20 times throughout the school year while keeping a Thinkering Notebook and developing a portfolio of investigations and creations.
Sample daily afternoon format:
Eureka Club Staff:
Jessica McFarland, Lead Instructor - mcfarland@meta4edu.org
Sarah Harrington, Instructor - harrington@meta4edu.org
Darcy McMahon and Kristiina Pilnik, Manage and Develop Eureka Club Programming
